7. The Pivot

Introduction
This lesson will teach you the single most versatile element of boxing footwork - the pivot. The reason I believe it's the most versatile aspect of boxing footwork is that it can be used equally effectively at long range or when infighting at close range.

You are able, with simple shifting of the feet during the pivot, to open up a dizzying array of angles both for attacking and defending. You can do all of this without worrying about the complexities of diagonal movement.

Take the time to watch any fight, and you will very quickly see how often boxers use the pivot. It's an essential skill, so learn it.

Watch the video below a few times to get a really good grasp of how it’s done, and then read the Key Points section below to reinforce your learning. Also, if you would like to download a free step-by-step training guide detailing all the skills taught on this website CLICK HERE.

Key Points
  • To pivot to the left, push left from the back foot, whilst allowing the front foot to spin on its ball.
  • Once the push has been initiated the front foot simply rotates through 45 degrees, and the back foot simply moves across to the left, and the straight line between the toe of the front foot and the heel of the back foot remains the same throughout the movement.
  • To pivot to the right, spin the front foot on its ball.
  • Once the spin has been initiated the front foot simply rotates through 45 degrees, and the back foot simply moves across to the right, and the straight line between the toe of the front foot and the heel of the back foot remains the same throughout the movement.
  • Ensure your weight remains central of slightly back - DO NOT allow it to move over the front leg.
  • Ensure the straight line between the toe of the front foot and the heel of the back foot is maintained throughout the movement.
