This lesson will teach you the correct boxing jab. Don't let the fact that it's a simple punch to learn allow you to underestimate the value of having a perfect jab as part of your boxing armoury. A fast, clean, and accurate jab will spear through the defences of the most capable of fighters.
Every great fighter has a great jab. It’s the most efficient punch. The most regularly thrown punch. The punch that most often breaks the will of an opponent.
The jab can be thrown fast or slow. Flicked out or rammed home. On the move or on the spot. It really is the ultimate in punching versatility. It's the first punch that every boxer must master.
Watch the video below a few times to get a really good grasp of how it’s done, and then read the Key Points section below to reinforce your learning. Also, if you would like to download a free step-by-step training guide detailing all the skills taught on this website CLICK HERE.

Key Points
- Push from the front foot and rotate the upper body to align the hips and shoulders with the opponent.
- During the rotation throw the fist along a straight line to the target, and turn the palm down during the last 25% of its journey, clenching the fist as it snaps onto the target.
- Ensure the elbow follows the same line as the fist (i.e. it doesn't move laterally).
- Return the fist and elbow along the same line, and finish with the fist palm-inwards to the cheek.
- Avoid trying to hit too hard, because this often causes weight to transfer to the front leg.
- Avoid any tell-tale movements such as dropping the rear fist slightly that lets the opponent know you are about to throw a jab.
